Britain's first artificial waterways were Roman initiatives, and with their departure in the fifth century the canals fell into disrepair.

It was not until the industrial revolution that the advantages of extensive river navigation for travel and industry were rediscovered, and an impressive network of waterways was constructed across the country. Primarily used as a means of transporting goods such as coal, crockery and other heavy loads that could not be carried on the poor-quality roads, it was not until the advent of the railways that their precedence was challenged.

Michael E. Ware traces the history of these artificial waterways from Roman days, through the 'canal mania' of the late Georgian era, to the decline of commercial river traffic in the 1950s. Exploring how they were constructed and maintained, as well as describing the boats, cargoes and people that have travelled on them, he offers a fascinating insight into how the functions and character of Britain's canals have evolved.
