Like Birds of Point Reyes, this book identifies birds in a more well-known ecological area rather than an urban area, but the focus is much larger on the entire California Delta, aka the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.
The book's introduction makes clear the very special ecological landscape of the Delta, its specific environment for the types of birds highlighted, the challenges in preserving it, and a birding quick guide.
Like the other books in the series, each species is accompanied by beautiful original illustrations.
25 unique birds are highlighted in all, including the loggerhead shrike, tricolored blackbirds, pie-billed grebe, savannah sparrow, killdeer, and yellow-billed magpie.
Author is an Environmental Scientist working for the Wildlife Conservation Board. In the past he worked at the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy for over 5 years as an Environmental Scientist where he eventually led the Prop 1 Grant Program which funds projects to improve and restore ecological benefits to the Delta and Suisun Marsh.
The book's illustrator isCosta Rican artist Martha Espinoza, making this the first edition in the series with an illustrator different from the author.
There is need for this type of book centered on this specific and very important part of California's natural environment.
