When this approach doesn't seem to be going anywhere, their actions become more desperate and more violent, torn in two directions by a rapidly expanding membership and a schism in the higher ranks. When the lead pacifist dies under suspicious circumstances, Billy knows he has to change Darrow--or kill him.
