Bewick Gleanings

A lost gallery returns to light: the original copperplate and woodblock impressions from the famed Thomas Bewick workshop, gathered here as a single wood engraving collection of rare delicacy and power. Every image rewards close looking. In Bewick Gleanings, Julia Boyd presents authentic impressions from copperplates and wood blocks engraved under Bewick's eye, offering a vivid encounter with the tools, textures and line work that reshaped British woodcut illustration. Viewed together, these copperplate and woodblock prints form an antique printmaking book that still feels startlingly alive.

Gathered at a moment when Victorian era illustration was reaching extraordinary technical refinement, these Thomas Bewick woodcuts and workshop pieces capture birds, beasts, people and landscapes with an intensity of observation that influenced generations of engravers and designers. As an illustrated engraving reference, the volume reveals the subtle differences between trial impressions, finished cuts and later states, making it a quietly indispensable art history reference book and a rewarding book for art collectors, printmakers and lovers of British visual culture.

Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. As a classic illustration art book of 19th century British engravings, Bewick Gleanings speaks to casual readers drawn to historic images as much as to dedicated connoisseurs of Thomas Bewick woodcuts, offering a beautifully coherent portrait of one of Britain's most important schools of printmaking.
