Befriending China, Gold Winner of the 2025 Nonfiction Book Award in the International category, tells the story of China's current effort to "open up" to a flood of visitors, as part of a campaign of "People-To-People Peacemaking." The story is partially based on three visits to China from late 2023 through late 2024. It describes the impressive achievements China has made in infrastructure, education, health care, and poverty alleviation. It includes an in-depth eye-witness account of visiting Xinjiang, debunking official rumors in the US of abuse of the Uyghur population there. It also highlights exciting tourism opportunities, with closeup looks at the mountainous Guizhou and Shanxi provinces, and the amazing "megacities" of Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, Hangzhou and Suzhou. It includes a preface by Carlos Martinez, editor of the Friends of Socialist China website. It also examines China's democratic system, and its successful foreign policy based on common prosperity and a shared future. Finally, it details ongoing US efforts to slander China and prepare for war against it, arguing that China is not our enemy. Looking at prospects for peace and obstacles that could interfere, it includes details of US efforts to surround and "contain" China, and also provides details of China's Belt and Road Initiative and the BRICS coalition.

Industry Reviews

"Readers of this book will get a clear picture of what modern life in China is actually like, why the people of China overwhelmingly support

their socialist system, and the many ways the world can benefit from the vision of peace and shared prosperity that China offers.

"Dee Knight's descriptions of the harmful presence of US forces currently stationed in East Asia are exactly what is missing from the

US mainstream press coverage of the region, and his own experiences in China help show just how very contrary to reality

the US government's propaganda is. Instead of bullying and antagonizing China, Knight argues, the West should embrace it."

-Kyle Ferrana, author of Why the World Needs China

"Dee Knight's new book, Befriending China, is a joy to read. Knight combines both personal experience traveling and talking to people in

China with extensive research about China. Thus the reader gets facts and first-hand observations in a fluid, easy-to-read style that answers

many common questions readers may have about China. Many Americans have read the endless negative stereotypes of China promoted

in the Western mainstream media, but for those like myself who have actually been to China, those stereotypes fall apart during one's first

visit. Knight takes the reader through that experience, as he describes his various visits in concrete and sometimes colorful and delightful

detail, with scenes, conversations with locals, and photos combined with facts, charts, and statistics that clearly show the real China. Why

should we Befriend China rather than seeking conflict? Because both our nations can win a positive future together, as this book makes

abundantly clear."

-Michael Wong, co-founder of Pivot To Peace, and board member, Veterans For Peace

"Dee Knight's latest work provides an intimate and accessible view of China, a land most Americans know nothing about. Knight's personal

experience traveling to China coupled with an analysis of the facts effectively counters the Western media anti-China spin currently bringing

humanity to the brink of war. This book is a must-read for those interested in what China is like on the ground and what we need to do to

stop the warmongers threatening a war against this rising country."

-Danny Haiphong, co-founder, Friends of Socialist China/US, and host, Danny Haiphong's Interview Show

"Dee Knight shares his life wisdom and experience with us as a carpet of connection and relating to China - a country we are programmed

with propaganda to make our enemy. He reveals in so many ways that China Is Not Our Enemy but has an abundance to share with us."

-Jodie Evans, co-founder, CodePink, and convenor, China Is Not Our Enemy delegations

"Befriending China is a wonderfully readable book that easily weaves big political points, history, and culture into a conversational travel log. Dee

Knight combines vivid descriptions of China's modern cities, numerous anecdotes of passing meetings with thousands of facts on infrastructure,

bridges, EVs, railroads, and green tech in an engaging way. This book is full of the travel trips that will have you packing your bag. It is also

forthright in defending China and encouraging its readers to resist the concerted US war drive. Describing China's enormous confidence in a

shared future provides hope that a different direction is possible."

-Sara Flounders, national organizer, International Action Center, board member, United National Antiwar Coalition and

contributing editor, Workers World newspaper
