A decade ago, a writer from "Fortune "magazine wrote in the preface to Kim Woo Chong's book, "Every Street is Paved with Gold, "that Kim, the Daewoo empire's founder, "personifies the drive and imagination that makes East Asia a dynamic center of economic growth." Kim fled South Korea in late 1999, shortly after his empire crashed. From his initial exile post in Frankfurt, he submitted his resignation from all the Daewoo group's companies. He has left no clue about his whereabouts since then.Kim Woo Chong's meteoric rise as one of Asia's most powerful tycoons, and his equally spectacular fall, symbolize the Asian miracle and the prolonged crisis that threatended to destroy it in 1997 and that still hangs over the economic landscape. The system's flaws became apparent in mid-1999, when Kim acknowledged that his companies, which had acquired a global reach in a debt-fueled expansion binge, could not pay their creditors. By the time the banks that took over the Daewoo group had calculated $80 billion in liabilities, Kim was changing addresses in Europe. For Asia, lessons from the crisis indicate that traditional methods of operation through debt financing and over-investing will fail. This lesson and others are explored in "Asian Post-Crisis Management."

Industry Reviews
'Offering a surprisingly thorough and accurate diagnosis of where the Asian economy stands, this book is mandatory reading for everyone who wants to gain a clear understanding of the Asian economy. Particularly outstanding is the critical evaluation of restructuring and corporate governance reforms currently under way in major Asian countries, including Korea, Japan and China.' - Nam-Kee Lee, Chairman, Fair Trade Commission, Republic of Korea

'Now that East Asia has recovered, mostly, from the 1997 financial crisis, it faces the threat of a repeat performance. If the worst does recur, it will be because government and business ignored the advice of Asian Post-Crisis Management, a collection of cogent studies about the causes and prevention of economic meltdown. The book is useful reading for anyone who cares about the region: especially for those with a stake in its economic future.' - Robert Keatley, Editor, South China Morning Post, Hong Kong, SAR

'This book is loaded with profound analysis and deep insight on what actually happened during the recent Asian financial crisis and vividly demonstrates how the affected countries are strategically reshaping their economies. ' - H. M. Choi, President and CEO, Mirae Asset Securities

'Full of comprehensive studies and in-depth knowledge, Haley & Richter have assembled a wide-range of expert analysis and woven them into an organic whole, providing valuable insight into the Asian post-crisis economy and business environment. A dynamic road map for corporate executives and government policy makers, who take Asia very seriously.' - Jerry Zhang, President and CEO, Neoteny Broadband, USA
