With her life finally back under her own control, Owyn Kellobyn plans to resume her duties as a Merchant, selling magickal goods and pretending the ruling Council doesn't still loom in the shadows.
But those plans are interrupted when Heathlyn Davvins, heir to Gerennt's overthrown royal family, asks for her help. A resistance is growing against the Council and its suppression of the country's magick, and Owyn's reputation and connections as a Merchant could lend legitimacy to Heathlyn's claim to a reestablished throne. Soon, Owyn finds herself travelling toward the border, where loyalty is uncertain and rebellion is quietly taking root.
Crossing into a world beyond the Council's reach forces Owyn to confront everything she thought she knew about magick, freedom, and the people who shaped her. The farther she travels, the harder it becomes to ignore the truth about Gerennt, or the unsettling truths she begins uncovering about herself.
Unsure whether either truth is something she's ready to face, Owyn must decide how much she owes the people who see her as a symbol of something greater. Because staying out of the fight may no longer be an option, and obligation has a dangerous way of becoming something worth fighting for.
