The primary aim of this book is to create a frame of reference for writing research, from a number of approaches to inquiry and for a number of purposes. It is directed to identifying principles for writing from within commonly used methodologies and methods in health research, which should guide writers to transform research data into written forms. The emphasis is on the writing task, rather than how to conduct the research, which follows after research data has been collected. The explanatory aspects of the content of the book should assist researchers in the development of research proposals and those who critique or review research for any purpose. How writers should engage in writing about the methods used for each methodology is a major feature of the book. The writing task is linked to philosophical and theoretical perspectives of research. The assumptions about truth and reality underpinning the various methodological approaches to inquiry, which are implicit in the choice of methods and reflected in the style of presentation and organisation of research documents, are summarised. In addition the book discusses the commonalities and differences between the different forms research writing takes: specifically theses, journal articles, conference papers and research reports are discussed. How the writing tasks of each component of research documents are managed, depending on the purpose for which the research paper is being written, is discussed. The writing process, as it applies to research, is examined and techniques for writing discussed. Strategies for dissemination, including the publication process, are addressed. Practical hints and suggestions are included throughout, with examples where appropriate.
