A kind description of that viewpoint would be skepticism regarding neoclassical interpretations of free trade and development. Edited by UK academics, the book is divided into four sections. The first outlines various periods of trade and their effects on various regions, starting with European expansion in the 1500s and proceeding to international debt crises of the 1990s, with a final portion devoted to possibilities for the next millennium. There follow analyses of import substitution and export-oriented trade policies and a subsection examining the experiences of immigrant workers. Specific national experiences in Cyprus, Spain, South Korea, Mexico, and China are analyzed along with developments in the copper industry in Chile, Spanish tourism, and the global textile industry.
