Joyce Gould grew up in Leeds in a Jewish family when left-wing politics were everyday conversation. On joining the Labour Party, she found herself influenced to be an involved member by the strong and feisty Yorkshire women who took her under their wing. After two decades as a voluntary worker, she was appointed as the party's chief women's officer, and later as director of organisation. Those were turbulent days, as discord grew within the party. As well as building the organisation of Labour, she was charged with the task, over the next eight years, of removing the Militant Tendency from the party. It was this part of her career that was to earn her the title of Witchfinder General. She travelled the country interviewing and listening to concerned members, and, when necessary, taking disciplinary action, which played a vital part in restoring the party to becoming electable. On retiring, Joyce was elevated to the House of Lords as Baroness Gould of Potternewton. During the course of her sixty-three years as a Labour Party member, whether as a volunteer, a national official or an advocate in the House of Lords, she has held firmly to her beliefs in the empowerment of women and of the removal of racial and sexual discrimination and injustice. She identifies as one of her proudest moments the organisation of the successful campaign in the Lords to abolish the iniquitous Section 28. Now, at eighty-two, she maintains her commitment to the Labour Party as the instrument for social change and a better and fairer society.
Industry Reviews
"A warm and uplifting read. It is riveting in its description of the routing of Militant and strong in its conclusion that the outcome of this May's local elections will be a 'defining point' for the 'new Labour regime and its record'." - Progress
