Catherine Sloper is a plain girl, and the only child of a successful New York Doctor. Quite unprepared for the attentions of a handsome suitor like Morris Townsend. Certainly her father knows what Morris Townsend is about... but between Townsends greed and indolence, her aunts pathological desire to meddle and a fathers sarcasm, whatever will become of the poor girl in the middle of it all?
Adapted to stage and screen on multiple occaisions, although Henry James considered it poor at the time. The title has since gone on to be regarded as a classic.
