Commander Charles Lamb fought an exceptional war flying the slow and obsolete Fairely Swordfish for the Fleet Air Arm. Antiquated it may have been, but it could outmanoeuvre almost any other aircraft and in Charles Lamb's hands the 'Stringbag', as the torpedo bomber was affectionately known, was a deadly weapon.
He fought in the thick of the action. He was the last to land on Courageous before she was sunk in September 1939. He made 29 sorties over northern Europe. He attacked E-boats throughout the nine days of Dunkirk. He was one of the two pathfinders who led the way to the Battle of Taranto, when twenty Swordfish virtually destroyed the entire Italian fleet. He was shot down by Stukas, but flew again to deliver havoc on enemy shipping in the Mediterranean and in defence of Malta. Fantastic incident and casual heroism run throughout this splendid book.
This is his story, from the first day of war as a Lieutenant on board Courageous to the accident aboard Implacable in action against the Japanese in June 1945 which ended his war. It is a rare story of determination, action and spirit by a man who was never less than an inspiration to those around him. There is no finer account of war in the Fleet Air Arm.
