A follow-up to Visualities: Perspectives on Contemporary American Indian Film and Art, this volume examines how indigenous film practices and the text/image interplay in contemporary American Indian artworks contribute to indigenous visualities. It also addresses indigenous cultural production and the role of artistic expression in the creation or reclamation of identity and global indigenous visualities, including First Nations, aboriginal Australia, Maori, and Sami. Native and non-Native scholars of film studies, English, indigenous studies, and other fields from the US discuss indigenous film practices, including Kent Mackenzie's The Exiles; Alex and Andrew Smith's Winter in the Blood; Catherine Ann Martin's The Spirit of Annie Mae; Tasha Hubbard's Birth of a Family; Blackhorse Lowe's Shimasani; Amanda Kernell's Sami Blood; Rachel Perkins Radiance, One Night the Moon, and Bran Nue Dae; and Barry Barclay's Ngati. They also examine contemporary American Indian art, with discussion of how indigenous artists reimagine the submissive aboriginal figures presented at Canadian settler monuments of Indians, focusing on Ehren "Bear Witness" Thomas' Make Your Escape; James Houston's Inuit arts program from the 1950s, which became known as the West Baffin Island Co-operative; and how indigenous activists, artists, scholars, and others reimagine digital and social platforms and how Native users visually shape those media.
