Virtually You makes the stunning assertion that the virtual world is reconfiguring our psychological landscape, unleashing an 'e-personality' that is negatively interfering with our home lives, our careers, our romantic relationships, and our very concept of ourselves. Aboujaoude defines the online self as an independent creature, unfettered by rules of behavior, social exchange, or etiquette. He draws on his clinical work and research in the fields of linguistics, neuroscience, sociology, and philosophy to identify the most common, and often negative, psychological traits that define this new 'e-personality.' These include an exaggerated sense of self and what we are capable of, a suspension of ethical standards that can lead to dangerous, end-justifies-the means callousness, and a tendency to quickly regress to childlike states. Real-life examples include a patient of Aboujaoude's who compulsively shops only when online; the author's foray into the virtual world of Second Life; the suicide of a teenager (Megan Meier) as a result of cyber harassment on MySpace from her adult neighbor (Lori Drew). The second half explains the ways these behaviors and pathologies are carried into our offline lives, specifically our relationships, knowledge base, personal ethics, and memory. Virtually You ends with the conclusion that the negative consequences of virtual life are starting to takeover the real life of many individuals, changing our day-to-day reality and alternating what we experience, see, and learn.
