Set in an ancient Viking world full of brooding Norse mythology and bloodthirsty battles, "Viking - Odinn's Child" is the stunning first volume in an epic historical fiction trilogy. In the year 1001, a toddler arrives on the shores of Brattahlid in Greenland to be brought up in the fostercare of a young woman - Gudrid. The toddler is a rootless character of quicksilver intelligence and adaptability. With the ability of second sight, his destiny lies beyond the imagination of those around him. He is raised by various mentors, who teach him the ancient ways and warn him of the invasion of the 'White Christ' into the land of the 'Old Gods'. Thorgils is guided by a restless quest for adventure and the wanderlust of his favoured god - Odinn
Industry Reviews
A mixture of fantasy and high historical drama, this first book in a Viking trilogy finds the psychically-blessed orphan Thorgils Leiffson growing up in a superstitious world that contains many enemies. As a young man he is inspired by the wanderlust of his favourite god, Odinn, and attempts to emulate his celestial hero. The action comes quicker than a lightning raid by Thorgils's marauding band. Severin cleverly incorporates a dash of Viking saga into his tale of high adventure, and cleverly evokes the images of lives lived a millennium ago. Shipwreck, battle, disease and near-execution all enter the life of Thorgils, who needs quicksilver intelligence to outwit his enemies. Everything seems lost when he embarks on a doomed expedition to Vinland, which is inhabited by the fearsome Skraeling people. But Thorgils is not one to give up, nor to underestimate the power of the favourite god that guides him. A gripping, graphic tale of epic scope.(Kirkus UK)
