Ember, an Echoist from the coastal village of Oakhaven, can hear the emotions and memories imprinted on stone, metal, and bone. Every ruin screams; every relic mourns. After losing her father and aunt, she's left defenseless in a realm where the powerless are easily crushed. Refusing to wait for fate to destroy her, Ember volunteers for imperial conscription-a desperate attempt to seize control of her life.

But once the wagon doors slam shut, she realizes she's the only recruit who entered willingly. Six conscripts from across the empire are dragged toward Urthforge, a volcanic academy rising from a stormâ'torn sea. There, they must endure lethal training, ruthless politics, and the Marking Ceremony, where each cadet binds their soul to a primeval guardian-wyverns, amphitheres, and aralez with immense elemental power. Failure means ruin.

Ember's greatest threat, however, is Kross: a weapon forged by the empire, disciplined, detached, and dangerous. During a violent clash, a forbidden heartbond ignites between them, fusing their souls and marking their skin with radiant sigils. The academy masters immediately isolate and test them, pushing their volatile connection toward collapse. Yet beneath the hostility, a slow, fierce devotion begins to grow-Ember uncovering Kross's buried humanity, and Kross becoming fiercely protective of the one person who makes him feel.

As trials escalate, the recruits discover Urthforge is built on a lie. Tremors shake the volcanic foundation, echoes whisper warnings, and something ancient and malevolent stirs in the deep. The academy isn't training them for war-it's preparing them for something far worse.
