Alan Titchmarsh has had a passion for gardening for as long as he can remember. Aged 8, he announced to friends that he was going to be the next Percy Thrower, although he thought it was no more than a dream.

With the magic touch of a best-selling writer, Alan tells his own story from Ilkley Moor to Pebble Mill and to the final realising of his dream of becoming TV's favourite gardener. Along the way, the cast of characters includes everyone from Auntie Ethel to Nelson Mandela and the Queen.

With great charm, humour and passion, this is probably the best story Alan Titchmarsh has ever told.

Industry Reviews
The painful pun of the title sets the scene for this relentlessly cheerful autobiography. The most famous gardener in Britain, Alan Titchmarsh is the star of television show Ground Force, and here he recalls his life from his childhood in Ilkley to the present day. Titchmarsh has been dedicated to gardening for as long as he can remember, which is thoroughly admirable but, coupled with his self-confessed complete lack of a 'dark side', does not make for a riveting narrative. His memoirs consist of anecdotes about the people he has met, the gardens in which he has worked, and the flowers and plants he has grown, all told with unremitting jollity. A book which so readily glosses over struggles and hardships can't help but give the impression that the writer's life has been spent in a happy bubble of self-delusion; it's all down to a question of balancing seriousness with humour to create a mature and intelligent book, and Titchmarsh has surely done himself no favours in having failed to do so. Gardening enthusiasts looking for a light, untaxing read will no doubt derive pleasure from this book; for everyone else it's just another example of a harmless but pointless celebrity autobiography.
