In 1959, a triple-locked chest belonging to a Roman emperor is discovered in Great Britain. Three imperial keys have also been buried there, specially forged in AD53 to unlock its secrets.

Over the centuries, all these artefacts will eventually be found, but the lives of the discoverers will be changed forever. The story explores the creation of the three imperial keys and then their long-awaited discovery. Roman Britain was the chosen land where the artefacts were to be buried, having been scattered within the existing Roman settlements that were flourishing at the time. Over many centuries, the circumstances of certain individuals will be identified, together with their struggles, conflicts, and innocent involvement.

When all of the artefacts are finally unearthed, and the need to bring them together is realised, the chest's secrets can then be revealed. However, the three imperial keys have their own secrets, which will need to be solved. When that is achieved, only then will the secrets of an emperor be revealed to a more understanding world.

Industry Reviews

John's first novel is an impressive debut. It is well written, thoroughly researched, and a gripping tale of intrigue, tracing its origins from ancient Rome to post WW1 Britain. It has a fast paced, stylish plot line, keeping the reader's attention through to its stirring conclusion.

Dennis White, First Reader

A refreshing change. A story with believable characters, not caricatures. Real everyday human relationships and emotions. All in a saga that spans 2000 years with lots of twists and turns along the way. A great first novel, looking forward to his second.

Barry Hampton

Three Imperial keys is a powerful novel that affects lives from ancient times to modern day. A story that is refreshingly written with an everyday touch. It links the past and the present in a thoroughly entertaining way.

Lesley Byster

John Thornton's debut novel 'Three Imperial Keys' is like shadow boxing. You're always anticipating but never grasping. Intrigue, human values and a great plot woven together. Set in England from Roman times till today. This tale delivers. A great read.
