Duncan Chalk is a monstrous media mogul with a vast appetite for other people's pain. He feeds off it, and carefully nurtures it in order to feed it to the public. It is inevitable that Chalk should home in on Minner Burris, a space traveller whose body was taken apart by alien surgeons and then put back together again - differently. Burris' pain is constant. And so is that of Lona Kelvin, used by scientists to supply eggs for 100 children and then ruthlessly discarded. Only an emotional vampire like Chalk can see the huge audience eager to watch a relationship develop between these two damaged people. And only Chalk can make it happen.
Industry Reviews
In the pantheon of SF writers, Silverbag clearly deserves the epithet of legendary. Thorns is one of his best-known books, and has the insightful plotting, trenchant characterization and (most of all) dazzling panoply of ideas that we expect from him. The malign media tycoon Duncan Chalk thrives on others' pain, and utilizes it in order to feed the public. With the return of a space traveller (whose body has been taken to pieces and put together again by alien surgeons), Chalk decides to make use of him. Burris, the astronaut, finds a companion in distress in Lona Kelvin, whose body is used by scientists as the donor of eggs for a hundred children. With two sympathetic protagonists and a richly created villain, Silverberg is able to make cutting comments on many issues: personal responsibility, the omnivorous appetite of the media, the possibilities and dangers of untrammelled science. This is the kind of book that real SF aficionados use as an exemplar, and is the perfect introduction for those new to the genre. (Kirkus UK)
