The novel is set in Victorian England and begins with a dinner party where the Time Traveller demonstrates a small model of his time machine. He then invites his guests to return the following week to witness a full-size version of the machine in action.When the guests return, the Time Traveller tells them of his journey to the year 802,701 AD. There, he discovers that humanity has evolved into two distinct species, the Eloi and the Morlocks. The Eloi are small, childlike creatures who live in idleness and pleasure, while the Morlocks are ape-like creatures who live underground and provide for the Eloi.
