A beautiful forest. A terrifying legend.

It's 1986. Two strangers, hundreds of miles apart, grapple with disturbing incidents in a one-of-a-kind quaking aspen forest.

Knox is a new Forest Service ranger assigned to a vast, remote territory in Utah.

Sandy is a producer fighting for her place in a tough TV newsroom.

Both have heard about the shadowy figure believed to menace visitors to the forest. When a man disappears and reports of the Root Witch begin coming in, Knox and Sandy are plunged into a living nightmare.

Their lives converge on Halloween. Sandy sends a news crew to investigate the sightings. But when the team goes missing, and a shocking video surfaces revealing the ghastly truth, Knox and Sandy face the biggest decision of their lives.

This novel is based on a short story, "The Root Witch: An Urban Legend Caught on Tape."

The Root Witch is part of Debra Castaneda's Dark Earth Rising series of standalone novels. Read the books in any order.

Industry Reviews

"A wonderfully, imaginative, creepy well told story! The characters are amazing and well developed. The story is so well written and smooth, I felt like I was standing in the creepy forest staring down a shadowy monster. This is the second book I have read by the author, and all I can say is Debra is a top notch story teller!!"

"I loved this book! Debra is such a good author. This book literally gave me the chills while reading it, as her descriptions brought the story to life. Her writing style is very easy to read and I quickly became engrossed in the storyline and the characters and did NOT want to put it down. I'll be reading every one of her books now!'

"This cover is absolutely beautiful and man so is the writing style. It flows off the page like the wind through the trees. This book captures the feeling of dread and carries it within you through the whole story all while making you eager for more. The Root Witch is an amazing tale of Folk Horror that I felt some very strong Blair Witch vibes during reading."

"This book has great characters, steady and smooth pacing and creepy plot with a satisfying end. I am normally a fast reader but, every once in awhile I find an author whose writing I want to savor and really take my time with. Debra Castaneda is such an author. She is an incredible storyteller. I felt fully immersed and connected to the characters. I highly recommend this book to EVERYONE!"

"I am a huge fan of folk horror, and that is exactly what you get in The Root Witch. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and Debra Castaneda's writing flows like a lazy river. The storyline is original, and the character development is great; I cheered for most and jeered a couple of others. The author subtly creates an unease for the reader throughout. I also quite enjoyed the behind-the-scenes peak into a local TV news broadcast."

"The atmosphere was so engrossing that I felt as though I was in the forest myself. Next time i am out in the woods i will look twice at the roots sticking out of the ground. Knox was just a genuine character that, as an event unfolded you felt his feelings deep. Sandy was such a relatable person and came to really enjoy it when it switched to her side. Entwining the two worlds was done so well. Lastly, the end was not over the top or rushed, and I felt it was the most perfect way to end this spooky tale. Can't wait to read more from this author!"

"This book kept me hooked and had my heart pounding. I normally don't like 'horror' stories - I'm more of a cozy mystery fan - but this is so well written and chilling that I couldn't put it down. I was literally up all night reading! It has every element of a great read - good pacing, characters that you feel are believable and real and have their own interesting stories, and mounting tension that builds with each chapter until the truly terrifying conclusion. This was the PERFECT read for a stormy winter weekend. Debra Castaneda is a very talented storyteller with a wonderful writer's voice, who also excels at the technical aspects that make a book 'unputdownable'. If you want to lose yourself in a good book for a while, I highly recommend this one!"
