An epic hero's journey into the Great West.

Rock Island, Illinois, 1881, Colin MacGregor is heir to his family's coal mining empire.

Colin's smart, he has life all figured out. He enjoys life on the family's riverboat steaming up and down the Mississippi selling coal. He has friends, social status, and a budding romance with Mary.

Up the river, a scheming railroad baron conspires with his Masonic brothers to back a land grab-the largest the world has ever seen. A world away, an angry French admiral sets his sights on the U.S.

Disaster happens! People die-is Colin to blame? Overnight, his life comes crashing down-his self-worth shredded, his family grief-stricken. Mary leaves in anger.

Colin is thrust into a bizarre world of con-artists, spies, villains, and French insurgents. As dangers build in a twisted plot of cunning and deceit, Colin takes steps to protect the family, win Mary back, and catch the killers-only to find out that he's always been two steps behind.

Fate was just catching up to Mr. Colin MacGregor.
