The Analects, the 497 sayings of Confucius's conversations and activities, compiled by disciples and their disciples, are examined in this text in the context of their historical, cultural and intellectual setting. The sayings are organized into 20 chapters, chronologically arranged. The first four chapters contain the core sayings of the historical confusius; the balance is the larger body of thought and wisdom created by disciples and their followers - memories, accounts, sayings and quasi-sayings, invented conversations in the spirit and tradition of confucian philosophy.
