The Methuen Amateur Theatre Handbook is the essential guide for anyone in this field. Keith Arrowsmith, solicitor and experienced producer, leads the reader through the potential pitfalls of putting on a performance, from choosing a show, through auditioning, rehearsing and all aspects of stage management, to first night.
There are sections on budgeting, fund-raising, group organisation and management, legal rights and obligations, health and safety, copyright law, venues and front-of-house, plus a comprehensive reference section.
The Methuen Amateur Theatre Handbook explains what you need to know to achieve a trouble-free production. It includes a wide range of examples from the amateur theatre world, and many helpful checklists and guides. Illustrated throughout by cartoonist Harry Venning, of the Guardian and the Stage, this is a comprehensive and accessible handbook for all aspects of amateur performance.
Industry Reviews
One of the problems in staging amateur dramatics is how best to streamline the organizational aspects. Therefore, Keith Arrowsmith's aim in this handbook is to provide the information and advice necessary for completing the myriad tasks which can make putting on a play an ordeal as well as a pleasure. He proceeds logically from the initial planning stages through stage management to performance. Each section looks at key areas of preparation, such as rehearsal and marketing, most with a small introduction and conclusion that help in summing up the main points and overcoming typical problems. These sections are written by experts in their particular field, so, for instance, the Director of the Association of Youth Theatres discusses performance by youth groups, legal advice comes from a practising lawyer and an Inland Revenue officer provides an update on tax requirements and pitfalls. The level of information ranges from general contacts and useful addresses to specific advice - for instance, that once you have submitted your application for a National Lottery grant you will not be able to change it. A light touch is given by entertaining illustrations and sharp one-liners from Guardian cartoonist Harry Venning. The writing style is clear and concise and the text well laid-out, to assist quick reference. This compendium of personal experience and expert advice is invaluable for anyone seeking success in their amateur dramatic undertakings. (Kirkus UK)
