The Malcontent, usually considered to be John Marston's masterpiece, is one of the most original and complex plays of the Elizabethan theatre - complex in genre, in structure and in language. A major reason for the play's preeminence lies in the balance it achieves between the opposite claims of laughter and horror, placing this drama somewhere between Jonsonian satiric comedy and the disillusioned tragedy of Webster and Tourneur. The Malcontent is notable for its 'humours' characters: Malevole the disaffected malcontent, the weak-brained Duke Pietro of Genoa, Aurelia, his lascivious duchess, Mendoza, the treacherous politican, Maquerelle, an old crone of the court, and many more.
This edition, using the same authoritative text as the standard Revels edition, has notes designed for modern undergraduate use, answers various questions raised by the play and the playtext, and seeks to place The Malcontent within the theatrical traditions of the time. The introduction has been rewritten to take into account the most recent scholarship, making this edition ideal for students and playgoers.
