The Magic Train
Short Summary - "The Magic Train."
Zara never expected the ivy at Old Briar Station to rustle back like curtains. She was certain the bricked-up archway at the end of Platform Zero was only a rumor from her grandmother's stories-whispers about "Between-Places," where trains didn't merely cross towns; they crossed possibilities. Yet tonight the ivy sighed, parted, and revealed a lamplit platform kept outside ordinary time.
Sami, her brother, squeezed her hand. "We're not trespassing," he murmured, trying to believe it. Tiles shone beneath hanging clocks that ticked at different speeds. At the center waited for a locomotive the color of midnight, its brass edges glowing like captured dawn. On its side a name Zara somehow understood curved in bright script: The Enchanted Train.
Against her collarbone, their grandmother's old silver compass began to hum. Its needle didn't point north; it spun, then tugged toward the train. A conductor stepped down from the nearest carriage-a narrow man in a plum-colored coat, his hatband stitched with constellations.
"Good evening," he said, voice warm as a teacup. "Conductor Finch, at your service. You are timely, which matters more than being on time." He offered two tickets that changed color-gold for Zara, cobalt for Sami. "Board," he added softly, "if you mean to find something you love but have misplaced." "We're not looking for anything," Sami began, then glanced at the compass pulsing against Zara's skin. "We're looking for a way to understand," Zara said. "Perfect," said Conductor Finch. "Understanding requires travel."
The train exhaled a plume of starry steam. Along the carriages, doors displayed emblems-an acorn, a wave, a feather, a prism, a mountain, and others she could not yet name. Wind lifted the ivy like an audience leaning forward. Conductor Finch tipped his hat toward a door painted with a leaf made of tiny brass gears.
"Each compartment opens to a world with its own rules," he said, smiling in a way that was both warning and promise. "You go forward by going through." The whistle sang the first high note of a lullaby. Zara tucked the humming compass beneath her collar; Sami tightened his satchel strap. Together they stepped aboard, hearts bright with beginning, into the light.
