A priceless violin. A family torn apart.
A decision that could change everything.

Berlin, 1939. Fourteen-year-old Simon Horowitz is awash in a world of music. His family owns a superb collection of instruments and at its heart is his father's 1742 Guarneri del Gesú violin. But all is lost when the Nazis march across Europe, the Horowitz family's possessions are confiscated, and Simon and his father and brother are sent to Dachau. Amid unimaginable cruelty and death, Simon finds kindness from an unexpected corner, and a chance to pick up a violin in exchange for a chance to live.

In the present day, orchestra conductor Rafael Gomez has seen much in his time on the world's stage, but he finds himself oddly inspired by the playing of an aspiring violin virtuoso, a fantastic talent who is just fourteen. When the boy, Daniel Horowitz, Simon's grandson, suddenly rebels and refuses toplay another note, Rafael decides he'll do anything he can to change that. After Rafael learns the boy's family once owned a precious violin, believed to have been lost forever, he thinks he might know how to get Daniel playing again. In taking on the task he discovers a family story like no other, one that winds from World War II and Communist Russia all the way to Rafael's very own stage.

WRITE A REVIEW

Beautifully written novel

5

Exceptionally well-drawn characters with a captivating storyline. The novel manages to elicit subliminal responses about love, failure, loss and forgiveness without you ever realising that you have been taken on a remarkable journey. One of the best books I've read in some time. Definitely recommend. It also helps if you are interested in classical music.

An Absolute Joy

5

The Keeper of Secrets proved to be one of those "just one more chapter" books responsible for bags under my eyes, day dreaming at my desk and music, so much music, in my mind. And on the train this morning, tears as I reached the end. Julie Thomas has penned an absolute joy for her debut, a tale of loss and love, that transports you across oceans and across generations. Her writing evokes vivid images and strong emotions. You can almost hear the sounds of Berlin as chaos descends, smell the soiled blankets in the barracks of Dachau and, most importantly, feel the swell of your heart as she describes the many musical moments as only a real lover of classical music could. Just as a violin can cause the heart to swell and the emotions to tumble in the hands of a virtuoso like Daniel Horowitz, so, too, can a tale such as this in the hands of an author like Julie Thomas. I'm quite certain I will be reading The Keeper of Secrets more than once and eagerly anticipate Thomas's next endeavour.
