The community known as the Beta Israel originally hails from the northern part of Ethiopia. They were repatriated to Israel in many waves with extensive aid from both the Israeli government and the Jewish diaspora at large. Despite this initial aid, life in Israel has not been easy for the Beta Israel community. Zegeye compellingly argues that the expectations of welcome raised in the Beta Israel community were then comprehensibly thwarted by the Israeli government.
