Following the breakup of his marriage and the loss of a child, Ty Rossberg books himself a suite at the wrong hotel. There he meets his dream girl, Ellory Allen, a parking lot heiress who's on the run. Together, Ellory and Ty will conquer the world. But when they meet a laid-back prophet in the Olympic mountains, their dream life takes a nightmarish turn.

The Hotel Egypt is a dizzying contemporary satire, a meditation on masculinity and femininity, motherhood and fatherhood, and post-Jewish American identity, all of it brought together by plot twists constantly risking absurdity. Tender, merciless and compassionate, this blackly funny novel asks us to discuss why we build our own prisons, and why we keep trying to find a way out.

Industry Reviews

"The Hotel Egypt is a fever dream of America under Trump, of what we talk about when we talk about love, of the lies we tell ourselves, and the dreams that kick us out. The narrator Ty is a Rorschach test: see what you want in him and maybe some of them (or none of them) will be true. We are trapped in his perspective, so limited yet with imagined omniscience, in the way of Americans, of American men, of all of us during the death spiral of late capitalism and the planet."

-C. Kubasta, author of Abjectification and Under the Tented Skin

Praise for Stuart M. Ross's The Hotel Egypt

"This isn't a mere meditation on late-stage capitalism, late-stage American Judaism, and parenthood, but a ruthless dissection that gutsily gets into every dark corner of the minds of Ty and Ellory, the charmingly reprehensible protagonists of this epic novel. The rollicking, riotous, and absurd qualities of the prose call to mind Stanley Elkin, its shrewdness and sophistication Robert Coover, but the book, as a whole, is Rossian. A one-of-a-kind literary jolt."

-Avner Landes, author of Meiselman: The Lean Years

"The Hotel Egypt is full of so much - inventiveness, references, language. The characters may never be delivered from the contemporary wasteland they wander in a kind of ongoing dream, but Ross plumbs the depths of the unconscious and surfaces with keen reflections on selfhood and parenthood. Funnily disturbing and disturbingly funny.

  -Deborah Shapiro, author of Consolation

"Stuart Ross is the outer-borough pop culture love child of Jane Austen, Fran Lebowitz, and Whit Stillman, crafting literary-and literate, comedy of manners for modern consumption. What makes Ross's work a must read, outside of the brilliant dialogue mind you, is the comedy so clearly emerges from a place of isolation and anger and the manners are so wholly lacking. To which I'd add-what could be more timely or contemporary than that? Not much."

-Ben Tanzer, author of The Missing, UPSTATE & Lost in Space

"If you like your books dirty, your dad rock lyrics horny, and need subtitles for your prestige TV, you'll want to check in to The Hotel Egypt. Ross's characters refuse to be your friend, and embody late-capitalist American culture so sincerely, I couldn't decide if I wanted to hug them or punch them in the face."

-Jeremy T. Wilson, author of The Quail Who Wears the Shirt

"The Hotel Egypt, Ross' latest novel, is a waterfall of dialogue and breakneck absurdity; if it all can feel a bit much, Ross keeps the reader bolted upright with another punch-drunk scene that might be real or may just be part of Ty's fever dream."
