13 Reasons Why meets Saw

Name who I am and admit what you did to me, and I will set you free.

Jasmine Saira is a thirty-six-year-old woman, living by herself in Chicago, living an uninteresting life, until one random night, she is kidnapped out of her home by a fully disguised, voice altered, motorcycle helmet wearing, person calling themself, 'The Captor'.

The Captor holds Jasmine against her will in a remote location and tells her that she wronged them in their past, ruined their life and now they want to enact revenge against her. This revenge being playing a game with her: Guess their identity, name who they are and admit what she did to them to make them want to seek revenge against her. If Jasmine does not make a correct guess of who they are, The Captor will torture her. This game will repeat every time The Captor visits Jasmine in her makeshift holding cell, with torture methods of increasing brutality until Jasmine correctly names who they are. With no other options, Jasmine is forced to play The Captor's cruel game and figure out their identity, and that involves thinking about every person that she has ever wronged.

Industry Reviews

"This was a very engaging novel that will captivate most readers until the end. Originally, I expected this read to take a couple of weeks. However, once I started reading I had to know how it ends. As the story progressed, the stakes escalate, with the Captor becoming increasingly unforgiving and unpredictable in his torture methods. Many parts had me at the edge of my seat waiting for the Captor's reaction. Will it be the right name this time? The twists are not only surprising but rewarding, keeping the reader in suspense throughout."

-R.A. King

"This is one of my favorite reads of 2025. Its a perfect balance of SAW-like horror and genuine suspense & intrigue. THE CAPTOR blends flashbacks-within-flashbacks to explain how, Jasmine, the main character has come to become a captive and an intriguing mystery to go with its ghastly SAW-like consequences of her failure to identify her captor. I was blown away by the ending, and did a second reading to catch all the bread crumbs DJ sprinkled through the book. I cannot overstate how much the final reveal blew my mind - brilliant! This book puts its foot on the gas from the first pages and never lets up. If you are looking to find your next favorite horror author here is the place to start! I cannot wait for the follow on books."

-Jack Finn

"The novel "The Captor-Name Them" is written in such a way that it provides the reader with an exciting journey through each chapter and thus makes us enter the world of the main characters. D.J. McDowell, the author of this book, does a great job of building the world in which the action takes place. Using rich language, he accurately conjures up details that help readers to fully devote themselves to the action. The main characters are personality types that we meet in everyday life and with whom we can easily identify, through their inner struggles, but also through conflicts with other characters. Flashback moments, quick dialogues, a specific style of narration that the author of this book has, additionally allow you to follow the course of the plot with ease. Friendship, love, but also mystery and courage are just some of the themes that this novel deals with, and each is deeply explored and encourages reflection on life's questions and challenges. Whether you are a fan of thrillers, fantasy, even erotica, this novel is not limited by genre and offers a broad view of things. I'm sure this book has something for every reader. I recommend it to all those who want to escape into the world of imagination, as well as those who enjoy books that give pleasure in each chapter."

-Klaudija Ili?

"Overall, I found the premise interesting. A young woman is captured and forced to name someone without having any idea who they are or given any clues."

-Lesley Camphouse

"This book is definitely a page turner. It kept me curious throughout and eager to understand why The Captor was subjecting Jasmine to such brutal torment...and haha boy, did I get an answer! This story is jaw dropping and jarring. You think you feel one way and this book makes you do an emotional 180."
