sh fell like grey snow over Valdris. Kael Ashvane stood on the battlements, wiping a smear of black blood from his cheek. Below him, the lower tier of the city burned, sending thick, choking columns of smoke into a starless sky. He tightened his grip on Dawnbreaker. The sword felt heavy tonight—heavier than it had when his brother Edric carried it. Edric had fallen six months ago during Malgrath's first terrible assault, leaving Kael to bear the blade, the guilt, and the dying kingdom.
A screech split the air. The ash-wraiths were surging up the eastern wall, their bodies shifting like liquid smoke. Kael threw himself into the fray. He moved with brutal efficiency, Dawnbreaker glowing with a faint, sorrowful light as it sheared through shadow.
