On a cold December morning, Professor Jeremy Withers is waiting on a jam-packed subway platform for his train to arrive when a youth gang arrives and goes on a rampage. Brandishing chains, they terrorize the crowd of unsuspecting commuters, choosing Professor Withers as their main victim and leaving him for dead. After regaining consciousness, Professor Withers makes his way to campus and reaches his office only to find that it is completely empty--as empty as it was on the very first day he began his teaching career some 30 years before. As he contemplates this improbable circumstance, he is visited by two mysterious inspectors who appear at his door. Believing that they have come to investigate the crime that has just taken place, he soon finds that they are as enigmatic as the bureau they claim to represent, and he spends the next few days trying to locate them in a world that suddenly appears uncanny and unforgiving.
