Ocotillo, Texas, is a prosperous cattle town built on fresh whitewash and absolute fear. The citizens walk with their heads down, handing over envelopes of hard-earned cash to Hector Vasquez-a smooth, tailored crime boss who runs a brutal protection racket with the help of his heavy-handed enforcer, Dutch. Then drifter Eldridge Sample rides into town looking for a hot meal and a cold beer.
When Vasquez's men demand the ten-dollar toll for safe passage, Sample politely declines.
