Edith Stein, canonized in 1998 but still relatively unknown in the English-speaking world, provides an example of a Christian thinker deeply engaged in the debates of her own day. Her work offers models and insights for addressing the questions of the twenty-first century. Sarah Borden presents an overview of St. Edith Stein's life and thought, including chapters about her life and the major areas in which she wrote, such as her early work in phenomenology, her political writings, her studies on women and women's education, as well her later turn to medieval metaphysics, and spiritual and religious texts. Also discussed are the controversies surrounding Stein's beatification and canonization. Arranged by topic and proceeding largely in chronological order, the book is accessible and aimed at a general audience, although the material is presented in a way that will ensure its usefulness to specialists.
Industry Reviews
'Many readers perhaps already familiar with Edith's life, will be grateful for the opportunity now to engage with her writings. I consider this book a major contribution to the literature on Edith Stein.' Joanne Mosley, Librorum Aestimationes --Sanford Lakoff
Does Borden succeed? She most certainly does in portraying Stein s intellectual depth and width. Borden shows an intimate knowledge of Stein s corpu Borden is also a superb summarizer and organizer of Stein s materials, demonstrating a sound grasp of the intellectual and historical context of Stein s work and the many thinkers who influenced her. She makes light weather of Heidegger and Husserl, thinkers who are not always easy. We should be deeply indebted to Borden for helping establish the intellectual achievements of Edith Stein and providing an inspiration to philosophers and theologians who should definitely read this book.
