Trapped in a universe not his own, and the memory of a beautiful woman and circumstances beyond his control, Chris fights for the survival of Earth and the empire against a shadow government called the Syndicate of Free Worlds. Using an insidious drug that enslaves its victims through the threat of a terrible and unimaginable death, the Syndicate has enslaved government officials throughout the empire, sabotaging it at its very core. Forced to impersonate a member of the dreaded Tal-Shial, the empire's secret police, Chris learns to navigate this new and exciting world of technological marvels, superluminal travel, and alien worlds. Where do his loyalties lie, with the empire and the woman he desperately loves, or Earth and everything he has ever known? Are these two realities mutual exclusive or can he have both? With war seemingly inevitable, can Sergeant Chris Knight get to the bottom of this threat and win back the love of his life, or is the empire, and Earth along with it, doomed?
