In 1991, Dr Tom Lonsdale blew the whistle on the systemic animal cruelty and consumer fraud arising from the pet food industry/veterinary alliance. At the same time he proposed a simple, humane and economical solution for pets: a diet of raw meaty bones with occasional table scraps.
Rather than confront inconvenient truths, the pet food industry and veterinary allies turned truth upside down. They claimed that dogs and cats should only be fed factory-made products and that natural raw meaty bones were dangerous. Company-aligned vets attempted to silence Lonsdale. They made disciplinary complaints, accusing him of 'bringing the veterinary profession into disrepute'.
Undeterred, Lonsdale continued to campaign for better pet health and legal accountability for those he identified as partners in crime.
