"Sleeper Awakes" defies classification as it is an adventure story of quixotic proportions with fantasy and science fiction under and overtones that address political, personal and cultural quandaries with a serio-comic eye that is as refreshing as it is incisive. Within its pages are adventures of a hero well known in the future and the parallel present. Boyd, the traveller, is not stupid, but he sets out as a blockhead. Faced with grave peril but aided by curious beings both puissant and comical, Boyd strives across landscapes at once mundane and remarkable to find true love, save his skin and become somehow less of a blockhead. In this tale, Mathilde and Ekaterina Rigidstick and their cousin, Jackanapes Plenty, first come to life as agents of an exiled civilisation hidden in an alternate reality.
