Six Confessions

Six strangers confessed to the same murder.

The police had everything. A dead billionaire in his own study. DNA, fingerprints, security footage, the weapon. Within two days they arrested his former partner, and the case was airtight.

Then a woman walked into headquarters and said she did it. She knew things only the killer could know. The partner walked free. The next morning a retired judge confessed. Then a nurse. A foreman. A federal prosecutor. A priest. Six confessions, each independently verified, each carrying details the police never released, and every single one proving that another confessor could not have done it.

Defense attorney Tara Cross is appointed to the first confessor, a woman who does not want to be saved and is begging to plead guilty. Tara was a federal prosecutor once, until she put an innocent man away and lost her faith in the system. She does not believe her clients. She believes in proving the government wrong.

But this client does not want to be proven innocent. None of the six do. And the more Tara pulls, the more she understands that they are not confessing to a murder. They are burying something that happened twenty-two years ago, something powerful people erased, something they would each rather die in a cell than let back into the light.

To save a client who wants to be convicted, Tara will have to do the one thing all six have spent their lives preventing. She will have to tell the truth. And the truth has been sitting at her own defense table the whole time.

A legal thriller of impossible confessions and buried crimes, for readers who love a courtroom puzzle where eliminating a suspect only makes the mystery worse.
