ForeWord Clarion ReviewThree Stars (out of five)Silverback island strongestquality is its frankness, such as in a scene about cannibalism: "Even though the idea of eating a fellow human made me nearly gag at first, a day later I found myself dreaming what it would be like to consume the young lad's meat. I was no longer so repulsed, but rather, my mouth was watering as I gave it serious consideration."Londo's sincere efforts to incorporate issues of faith and supernatural elements into a survival-of-the-fittest story deserves credit. Julia Ann ChapentierSilverback Island, the crew members of a nineteeth-century whaling ship are lost at sea and take refuge on a deserted island, where they face many challenges, including an unknown enemy. While the basic scenario is, of course, familiar territory for an adventure novel, the author takes his story in an unusual direction: into the realm of science fiction. Londo's island features a thriving population of vicious gorillas, as well as the lone survivor of a destroyed city once populated by descendants of Atlantis. John Randolph Smith is second-in-command of a whaling ship that sets sail from Nantucket Island in 1820. While at sea, the ship sinks, killing its captain. Smith takes charge of the remaining crew, stranded in whaleboats. Eventually, they take refuge on an island inhabited by intelligent, monstrous animals who are eager to kill the crew members. One side of the strange land is a hellisk jungle, while the other side contains remnants of an earthly paradise, a throwback to the advanced society of Atlantis.Silverback Island addresses issues of faith in the spiritual realm, and in humanity. Silverback Island is a unique science-fiction novel that enthusiasts of survival adventures, as well as lovers of the supernatural will enjoy.
