When Mary Morstan asks Sherlock Holmes for help, her case appears at first to be one of disappearance and anonymous generosity: her father has been missing for ten years, and a valuable pearl has been sent to her every year by an unknown hand.

But the mystery soon darkens. A strange summons, a frightened heir, a locked room, a dead man and an empty treasure box draw Holmes and Watson into a story of greed, guilt and revenge stretching back to the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

The Sign of the Four combines the classic Holmesian elements of deduction, disguise, pursuit and revelation with a romance between Watson and Mary Morstan - one of the most important developments in the early Sherlock Holmes canon.

First published in 1890, The Sign of the Four followed A Study in Scarlet and further developed the partnership of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. It is presented here as Volume 2 of The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection, arranged according to the order of original publication.
