The people of Alban are afraid.

The tyrannical king and his masked Enforcers are scouring the land, burning villages and enslaving the canny.

Fifteen-year-old Neryn has fled her home in the wake of their destruction, and is alone and penniless, hiding her extraordinary magical power. She can rely on no one – not even the elusive Good Folk who challenge and bewilder her with their words.

When an enigmatic stranger saves her life, Neryn and the man called Flint begin an uneasy journey together. She wants to trust Flint but how can she tell who is true in this land of evil?

For Neryn has heard whisper of a mysterious place far away: a place where rebels are amassing to free the land and end the King's reign.

A place called Shadowfell.

An engrossing story of courage, hope, danger and love from one of the most compelling fantasy storytellers.

I am a huge fan of Juliet Marillier. I am immediately transported into a magical world, and feel as though I am really there. What a way to get away from all the trials, tribulations and stresses of modern day living. Keeps me alive and happy no matter what is going on!!

It was an enjoyable read. Maybe a little slow starting but I would still read the next book as it finished off well. This was not Marillier's best work but still enjoyable to read and fall in love with the characters.

Not Marillier's best but still worth it

I absolute adore Juliet Marillier and I will always be a fan, but i felt this book took too long to get to some action. I suppose the whole premise required the difficult journey and everything but I just kept waiting for that moment when the pace would pick up. And when i thought it had it would peak then slow down again... I'll still definitely continue the series as it's ended with lots of potential for the next book, but I just didnt enjoy it as much as her other books. Would definitely recommend though simply because the way she's left the ending opens up for lots of exciting adventures in the rest of the series.
