A likable young woman fighter pilot uses brain over brawn to disentangle herself from a series of treacherous threats to her people and their future. She's spunky, irreverent, and wiley, and I found myself as fiercely loyal to her as she is to her people. Thora Wolf's prose is richly worded, and appropriate to her title, packs the sparkle of stars and a gem-like luminescence. Her world is wrought with questions our own faces, in a fast-moving, wild ride that is above all, mesmerizingly unique and refreshingly fun. A page-turner that will leave you awaiting its sequel.

Meet Serral Brook, a girl fighter pilot in an alien world and an unforgettable main character! I love her drive and her swagger. I love her mechanical gifts. And I love the peril she's in, on this epic adventure, from the get-go. Thora Wolf deftly builds an entire universe and puts the reader in the center of it. If you loved A Memory of Empire by Arkady Martine or Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yaros you're going to gobble up Wolf's promising debut, Empire of Stars and Opals.

An entertaining debut novel blending romance with sci-fi fantasy. Having just read the non-fiction "Imminent" by Luis Elizondo, I already had lots of alien thoughts swirling in my head. And though the hero of this story is from the fictional planet Imset, it offered a possible explanation about the different races of aliens that have visited Earth and what a dystopian future might look like for humankind.

Empire of Stars and Opals totally swept me away! Serral's story feels timeless and fresh, and it's so easy to root for her. The universe that Thora Wolf creates is completely terrifying and utterly amazing. I missed my subway stop multiple times while reading because I couldn't put it down!

Set in a world with aliens, a feisty female fighter pilot is captured to the aliens' side, and finds the possibility of romance for herself and hope for the future of mankind. Not my usual genre, but full of interesting characters and a great story.
