I've never considered myself to be a great writer, nor a writer of any kind, in fact. However, in my retired years, I have spent a great deal of time reading books both good and bad. As I reflect on my own life, it may not be packed with mystery, suspense, action, great romance, or adventure, but there are plenty of things worth putting down on paper for posterity. I've been toying with the idea of writing my "memoirs" and while the idea isn't particularly daunting, as I can certainly string a few words together, the means of getting it out in the world is what really intimidates me. I'm not as Internet-savvy as most other people, so this book provided me with a simple, straightforward guide to getting my words not only down on paper, but potentially into the hands of those who might benefit from my wisdom. This book actually gave me the confidence to move forward with my plan, knowing that although it won't be easy, there are certainly techniques and strategies that will great increase my chances of getting my story out there. Whether or not this advice will ever come to fruition in the form of my own book is yet to be seen, but Benitez understands the challenges of publishing in modern times, and presents a comprehensive and easily accessible guide for people just like me.

Although certain areas were a bit beyond my scope of knowledge, the screenshots and the examples pulled directly from authors, some of whom were also trying their hand at self-publishing for the first time, made me confident that if they could do it, so could I. I'm sure I'll return to this book plenty of times in the future when I need more guidance and the tips and tricks this book offers are truly ideal for someone who wants to get involved in the world of publishing without feeling overwhelmed. In Self Publishing Benitez uses his personal experiences to teach you how to do many things related to publishing your own book starting with identifying your reason for writing a book.

You will also learn the definition of traditional publishing, vanity publishing, subsidy publishing, POD publishing, and self publishing. Benitez will give you ideas on how to plan your book from planning through cover art, formatting, creating a searchable title, and editing. He also explains the differences between publishing software and productivity software.
