In his 1981 work, The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light: Mythology, Sexuality and the Origins of Culture, Thompson established his own integral approach to the study of myth and science. From his years of living in Bern and Zurich, Thompson became acquainted with the Gesamtausgabe of the German-Swiss theorist, Jean Gebser, whose poetic vision of the evolution of consciousness helped steady the focus of Thompson's own approach to myth, literature and science. This intellectual encounter found expression in his 1966 book, Coming into Being: Artifacts and Texts in the Evolution of Consciousness.
In Self and Society, Thompson takes his study of the foundations of Western civilization two steps further in illuminating how the emergence of complex dynamical systems is the foundation of a new planetary culture, and how literature and mathematics are inseparably united in the formation of mentalities that have unfolded through time - from Ice Age art to the new sciences of complexity.
Through his deep and personal association with scientists who have helped to articulate this new world view - Ralph Abraham, James Lovelock, Lynn Margulis and Francisco Varela - Thompson has been part of a cultural movement of which this new volume is an expression.
