Gary Whitehead's Seeing Double is a powerful collection full of adroit turns-often syntactically stunning-while rife with heart and the kind of sagacity that comes from plumbing one's past failures. There are many loves evident and made memorable here-for family, community, self, and for the grace of discovery in the line and in the life. The hardness and radiance throughout this book remind me of something Williams once observed: "cinders // in which shine / the broken // pieces of a green / bottle."
