Riftborne

What inspired the writing duo Bree Grenwich and Parker Lennox to collaborate on their debut novel?

Bree Grenwich and Parker Lennox are platonic soulmates who met at 19 and discovered a mutual passion for fantasy literature featuring strong female protagonists and romantic tension. After years of friendship built around their shared interests in badass heroines and steamy romance narratives, they decided to combine their creative energies to co-author Riftborne. Their close friendship and compatible vision for storytelling allowed them to bring their long-held dream of writing a novel together to fruition.

What is the Isle of Sidhe setting and how does it shape the story's conflict?

The Isle of Sidhe is a realm recovering from a devastating rebellion that occurred decades before the events of the novel, creating a society marked by division and tension. This post-rebellion landscape has established strict power dynamics where the Sídhe Guard maintains control, forcing individuals like Fia to live in fear and secrecy. The oppressive atmosphere of the Isle directly influences Fia's survival strategies and sets the stage for the political intrigue that drives the narrative forward.

How does Fia Riftborne's character differ from typical romantasy protagonists?

Fia begins the story as someone actively trying to remain invisible and powerless rather than seeking adventure or recognition, making her journey particularly compelling as circumstances force her out of hiding. Her survival has depended on suppressing rather than embracing her abilities, which creates an internal conflict between self-preservation and self-actualisation. This reluctant hero arc, combined with her working-class perspective in a world controlled by those who destroyed her former life, provides a fresh take on the chosen one narrative.

What role does General Laryk Ashford play beyond the romantic storyline?

General Laryk Ashford serves as both a representative of the oppressive Sídhe Guard system and a catalyst for Fia's transformation, offering her an impossible choice that fundamentally alters her trajectory. His position as an elusive military leader suggests he wields significant political power within the post-rebellion society, making him a key figure in the broader conflict beyond the romantic tension. The complexity of his character lies in his dual role as both potential oppressor and unexpected ally, which fuels the true enemies-to-lovers dynamic central to the story.
