Retranslation is a phenomenon whereby works are translated more than once. This book takes two often translated works and offers a detailed exposition of how these tales are retold in their successive English translations. Despite retranslation boasting a very tangible presence in practical terms, theoretical considerations of its motivations and outcomes are infrequent; there is even less in the way of empirical study. This book seeks to redress the balance through its multiple case studies on the British initial translations and retranslations of Flaubert's Madame Bovary and Sand's pastoral tale La Mare au diable. It looks at the workings which underpin retranslations and the two authors within the British literary context. What emerges is a critical synthesis of the main lines of enquiry into retranslation- as a corrective measure against previous divergences from the source text, as an act of challenge and as a means of updating. Degrees of convergence with or divergence from the original narratives are measured by implementing several frameworks, narratology, Systemic Functional Grammar and genetic criticism.
