A large part of Keucher's work for the last decade has involved meeting with leaders of congregations to discuss financial or 'business' concerns-building maintenance, investments, leasing or selling property, finding a way to deal with a budget gap.

He has seen two dynamics again and again that he address in this book.

First, leaders often choose the path that seems easiest or cheapest now. Their calculations rarely include the long-term consequences of their decisions. Keucher encourages leaders of congregations to 'remember the future' so that the needs of the present are balanced against what's best for the long term.

Second, the governing bodies of churches seem always to be inventing the wheel. Keucher offers a primer on sound asset management. He identifies the dynamics that often keep a group of leaders from adopting those practices. Keucher's discussion throughout is non-technical, direct and accessible.
