Red-Spotted Ox is the autobiography of an indigenous Pokot man, Domonguria, as told to Pat Robbins in the early 1970s. Domonguria spent his life near the Kenya-Uganda border in East Africa in a world already then under rapid change. By allowing Pat Robbins to record and write up his stories, he realied he could help preserve an account of a unique Pokot way of life for future generations. As he said: "It is time for our Pokot traditions and history to be written down, so that our schoolchildren can read about their own heritage and others can understand and appreciate our culture. That is why I recorded this story." The book addresses a variety of subjects, and gives us insight in the very fundamentals from which modern Pokot society has evolved. Pat Robbins received her master#x19;s degree in comparative international education from Michigan State University, East Lansing. She worked with her husband, Larry Robbins, in Kenya and Uganda in 1968-69 on archaeological excavations and was able to record in Swahili the life story of Domonguria.
Industry Reviews

-Through this evocative text, readers learn what it once meant to be Pokot through the recollections of a man remarkable for his reflective intellect. Compelling anecdotes tell of being chased by an ostrich as a child; the origin of the Lion Clan as recounted by one of RSO's mothers (following Pokot kinship terminology) after a hair-raising and increasing lawlessness through late colonial and post colonial times... such engaging stories could animate an undergraduate introduction to African Peoples. Recommended.-
