Crime scene investigator Rachel Cohen is accustomed to dealing with death. It's part of her job, and she keeps her emotions out of it. In fact, nothing seems to get to the smart, sexy and savvy investigator.

As if life wasn't getting complicated enough, she finds that her beloved lead detective and mentor retires, mysteriously making way for Rachel's first love, Hal, to step in as her new boss. Confidence, sarcasm and wit have always been in her corner, even amidst the most trying of circumstances...

But that all changes when Rachel decides to wipe the dust from the top of a cold case box. Her curiosity causes a sequence of unbelievable events that leave her an emotional wreck and those surrounding her are left to question her sanity. Working with Hal also pours salt in old wounds never healed and makes secrets from their past nearly impossible to be kept in the closet for the protection of both their reputations.

In terms of her work, this time, Rachel herself is the victim, as events nearly kill her and lead to the death of her fianc©. While there is little evidence to ponder, the crime leaves a floodgate to another realm gaping open. Even Rachel cannot explain the paranormal phenomenon, nor can she ignore the ghostly voices that bellow out her name at every turn.

To get to the bottom of the mysteries that surround her, Rachel must learn to approach her work as an investigator in new ways. Doing so, however, will lead to the discovery of dark family secrets and will cause Rachel to unleash some of her own.
